For The Birds!

Welcome Back!

This time I'm highlighting some birds we saw at the zoo. All but the last two were wild animals versus zoo animals. I didn't have enough Owl shots to highlight them on their own. This guy was alone in his cage and has a problem with his eye, which is why he is squinting up at the sun...his good eye was very sensitive to the sun...poor guy!

1st photo-a duck (not sure what kind)
2nd & 3rd-a cormorant
4th&5th-a gosling
6th&7th-a Snowy Owl

Today I have sick kid at home..I hope she isn't off school for very long and that I don't get it...The last cold I had hung around way too long! She was suppose to have her wisdom teeth removed this week, but with her cold, they don't recommend it, so we put that off for a couple of weeks! Should now be a quiet week with the dog and myself getting haircuts...guess which one costs more! Yep, the dog's! :-)

More later this week!

Road Trip!

Since the beginning of April, I have been working a 3-day week and so have two extra days off per week. Since then, I have spent all these days doing laundry and cleaning the house, so today I decided to have a "ME" day and head out with my camera!

It was such a beautiful day, so I drove to the ferry and headed over to Amherst Island to see what I could see! I saw a lot of little birds and quite a few hawks, then about 2 hours into my trip, I saw this Snowy owl and spent 1/2 hour with him, taking various shots. Thank goodness, the roads weren't busy as I was standing in the middle of the road for most of this time!

The only downside of the day is that my car is now disgustingly dusty!!! Inside and out..the joys of dirt roads!

So, here are the fruits of my labour today! I will post other bird shots next time!

Enjoy!

Snowy Owls

As mentioned, yesterday we headed to Amherst Island to check out the birds there. I had found out from the resources/newletters of the Kingston Field Naturalist (we're members), that the Island was a great place to see tons of different birds/hawks/owls...so off we went for a day of adventure!

We saw a few hawks first off and then we started seeing these white owls...we couldn't believe that there are snowy owls so close to home! I didn't get any close up shots of the hawks as they are so skittish and take off at the slightest sound.

We saw most of the owls right from the car and I would get out and try to get as close as I could to take their picture. I felt like an owl-chaser!! We then took a stroll through the Owl Woods--and yep, you guessed it, no owls! We did however see a lot of smaller birds that were red, green, pink, etc.etc..I will post them at some point too (I have to try to identify them first). We saw quite a few of these owls on various fence posts, telephone poles and in trees. We saw a couple of them flying and a couple looked like they were fighting too. PRETTY COOL!!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these as much as I did taking them!!!
